This paper undertakes a practical analysis on the structure and strategies of auto component outsourcing in the Korean automobile industry, focused on the numerical change of suppliers in the 1990’s.
Until the 1980’s, the supplier system in the Korean automobile industry had been an exclusive manufacturer-supplier relation and “pyramid structure”. Auto assemblers had resourced their components mainly inside their own networks. This exclusive supplier system had deviated the outsourcing strategies of the assemblers and as the result, had prevented optimal outsourcing of firm specific components. But having been influenced by the trend of the open-network in the world automotive industry in the 1990's, Korean auto assemblers have been outsourcing their parts from wider variety of suppliers in the 1990’s.
The key research questions of this paper are :(1) Is the supplier system in the Korean automobile industry really turning toward open-network? (2) How different are the outsourcing strategies of assemblers regarding firm specific components? (3) What are the characteristics of the supplier system in the Korean automobile industry? The implication of this study is identifying the unreasonable strategies of Korean auto assemblers that are great handicaping their competitive capability.
