〔Objective〕We developed a pharmacology education program to convey the knowledge necessary for safe nursing practice when caring for pediatric patients with nephrotic syndrome. This study objected to examine the effectiveness of the program and identify its challenges.
〔Method〕The education program was prepared as an on-demand video teaching aid and was developed by referring to various information sources, including clinical guidelines for idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children and the package insert for prednisolone. Participants were 25 nurses randomly divided into an intervention and a control group. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated by using a survey to compare the changes in safe nursing practice knowledge and awareness of nursing practice. The survey was performed at three time points: at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and four weeks after the intervention. We calculated the change in knowledge from the baseline assessment to the other assessments.
〔Results〕Six nurses were assigned to the intervention group and four to the control group. In the intervention group, knowledge required for safe nursing practice showed a significantly greater change from the baseline assessment to the assessment immediately after the intervention compared to the control group.
〔Conclusions〕The significantly greater change in knowledge in the intervention group indicates the effectiveness of this educational program and suggests that the program is effective in conveying the knowledge that nurses require when caring for patients with pediatric nephrotic syndrome.
