Rats given a foot shock (FS) in a box were more immobile and defecated more often than those rats without FS, when they were placed in the same box 24 hr later. This one-trial conditioned emotional response (CER) was not impaired by an electroconvulsive shock (ECS) administered 30 sec after FS. This finding agrees with our previous study (YAGINUMA and IWAHARA, 11) in which the similarly treated ECS disrupted the one-trial passive avoidance response (PAR) but not the CER tested 24 hr after FS in the same step-through apparatus. So far as PAR is assumed to be some function of CER, the retrograde amnesic effect of ECS upon PAR may be considered in terms of the interference with retrieval mechanisms rather than of the disruption of the memory trace consolidation.
