Objectives: To develop and validate scale for operating room nurses in providing instruction to undergraduate nursing students during practical training in the operating room, and to verify their reliability.
Methods: Draft scale was developed based on the results of a qualitative study that clarified the expected role of operating room nurses who provide guidance to students during practical training. A 72-item, 5-point Likert scale questionnaire-based survey was then distributed to teachers and operating room nurses involved in operating room practical training. Construct validity was verified through item analysis as well as exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability was verified through internal consistency.
Results: Valid responses were received from 118 teachers and 168 operating room nurses. As a result of item analysis and exploratory factor analysis for the teacher and operating room nurse groups, 34 items in 7 subcategories of the scale was extracted. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis for the teacher and operating room nurse groups showed that the goodness of fit of the teacher/operating room nurse model was CFI = .997/.980 and RMSEA = .010/.029. The Cronbach’s alpha for the subcategories of the scale ranged from .768 to .884 for teachers and from .828 to .917 for operating room nurses.
Discussion: The reliability and validity of the scale was confirmed to be within a statistically acceptable range.
