Abstract
Until recently, those engaged in the performing arts were considered to be
artists and not workers, and as such, did not receive legal protection from the
government, including workers’ accident insurance, and no progress has been made
in health and safety measures for these individuals.
This article introduces the efforts of the association “Arts Workers Japan,”
which is currently working to improve the current situation in which the many
serious cases of harassment and the problems of poor working conditions that
occur in the arts and entertainment industry make it difficult for young workers to
continue working and have even become a succession problem. These efforts are
being made with the aim of improving the situation and recovering comfortable
workplaces and a dream-inspiring arts and entertainment industry.
