Coworkers’ Fairness Perceptions and Tolerance for the Use of Telecommuting Arrangements: Effects of Autonomy, Complexity, and Task Interdependence

Based on the findings of earlier research in work–life balance and the conceptual arguments of the equity theory, this study investigates how work environment factors affect fairness perceptions and tolerance for the use of work-from-home arrangements. Results of data analysis showed that task autonomy and job complexity raised coworkers’ tolerance for working from home. Additionally, a high level of task interdependence strengthened the relationships between task autonomy and tolerance for working from home and between job complexity and tolerance for working from home. Policy recommendations are also discussed.
