Abstract
We have investigated the electro rheological properties of liquid crystal in smectic phase utilizing a parallel-plate type rheometer. Under steady shear flow, normal ER effect, i.e. increase in apparent viscosity under electric fields, was observed in nematic phase. On the other hand, the viscosity was decreased with the electric field in smectic phase in low shear rate region. Under small oscillatory deformation, once the electric field was applied, i.e. the smectic layer was structured, same rheological properties were obtained regardless of under electric field or not.
