Abstract
This article reports the results of an investigation of the 17-year relationship between a dance event called “Movement Art in Miyazaki” and the community, and hopes to reveal implications forhow this event should be developed in the future.
“Movement Art in Miyazaki” has introduced first class dance performances to the people of Miyazaki and has provided an opportunity for performers and audiences to share in the joy of dance. This event has also provided an opportunity for the Miyazaki Prefectural Art Theater (Miyazaki's center of art and culture) to mediate a close relationship between contemporary dance and the community. This event was nominated by Miyazaki City to be a recipient for the Miyazaki City Fund for the Promotion of Art and Culture, and has helped art groups and mass media to realize that dance is a form of art that the community should support. However, public recognition and the cultural environment surrounding the art of dance in Miyazaki is still far behind that found in big cities such as Tokyo. An analysis of the history of “Movement Art in Miyazaki” carries implications for future development in that creating a more collaborative relationship between the event and the hall and between the event and the community will help “Movement Art in Miyazaki” to gain more public recognition and support.
