This first part of this paper reports on discussions during symposiums on the New Directions of National Spatial Strategy after the East Japan Earthquake, which were held twice in 2011, and discussed issues from the long-term point of view concerning the national spatial strategy which should be reconsidered due to damages caused by tsunami and the subsequent accident of the nuclear power plant. The second part introduces a study on the vision for reconstruction of the Sanriku region, which emphasizes the importance of the regeneration of the reconstruction based on its rich cultural life.
