Because of the accuracy and rapidity for testing, a method by the use of the Dean and Stark apparatus and the Soxlet extractor is the most practicable for determining oil and water saturation in cores. A method which makes use of the critical solution temperature of alcohol is adaptable for small samples. The main objection to a retort method is the possibility of driving out water of crystallization.
