The purpose of this paper is to reflectively explain the meanings of basic education in
special needs education school of students with intellectual disabilities. The reason for
focusing on special needs education schools is that the differences in abilities among
individuals can’ t be ignored when theorizing basic education as education for all. One of the
authors, a teacher of a special needs education school, interviewed five co-working teachers
on education for living in dignity. The data from the interviews are analyzed while reflecting
the authors’ educational practice to extract three topics as such; the teachers’ understanding
of basic education, the beliefs of the teachers and reflection by the teachers. As result, we
present the perspective that the core of basic education is to form the self to communicate
with the external world through the body and the perspective that basic education is practice
to make meaning of the world collaboratively among learners and educators.
