The levels of urinary noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (Ad) were determined in Japan Air
Self-Defense Force F-15 pilots flying trans-Pacific flights. Flight duration was about 7.4 hours from
Japan to Alaska and 6.8 hours from Alaska to Japan, respectively. The urinary NA and Ad
concentration were measured in urine samples collected from 16 pilots at pre-, and post-flight. The
urinary NA and Ad levels at post-flight were significantly higher than those at pre-flight. The ratio
(post/pre-flight) of NA and Ad levels (means ± SE) were 1.26±0.08 and 3.86±0.70, respectively.
These results suggest that flight stresses would be relatively excessive for the pilots flying
trans-Pacific flights, and mental stress especially might be excessive.
