After the characteristics of vibrations on the membranes of tsuzumi (Japanese traditional drums)have been reviewd, ootsuzumi and kotsuzumi tones are analyzed and their several physical parameters are extracted by means of discrete Fourier transform(DFT)techiques, and the synthesized tones using these parameters are produced and studies with regard to the features of these physical parameters contributing to the tone quality of tsuzumi. Physical parameters of tsuzumi tones are classified in the following, (1)waveforms, (2)spectrum, (3)amplitude envelopes of partials, and(4)time-variances of the frequencies of partials, and they are analyzed for several playing styles. Three synthesis methods if the following are applied to the simulation of tsuzumi tones, (a)partial synthesis, (b)additive synthesis, and(c)additive synthesis which includes partial synthesis on parts of spectrum, As a result, it is verified that the synthesized tones have good similarity to the original ones using the method(a)above for ootsuzumi tones, (b)for otsuzumi ones of Otsu and Hodo styles, and(c)for kotsuzumi ones on Kashira and Kan styles. These results may be applied to the synthesis of electronic musical instrument tones
