Abstract

Knowledge sharing is one form of knowledge management. Knowledge sharing in engineering design is often realized by electronizing end results. However, those results include only final decisions. It is difficult for users to understand the circumstances and design intentions. Communication involves contexts such as circumstances leading to a conclusion and design intentions, which play an important role in knowledge sharing. In this paper, we propose an approach to knowledge sharing, where the contexts help the users to understand the background of decision making. We developed a prototype, which integrates the contexts in communication into our product data management system. We report a result of our experiment, where we applied our prototype to an engineering design problem.
