Abstract
In this presentation, we discuss Green IT (GIT) in Japan using the concept of “Translation" (Latour, 1986, Czarniawska and Sevon, 1996). Using this concept, the focus of our research is on how different actors understand, construct and spread the concept of GIT.
Based on an interview study consisting of 11 interviews conducted in 2011-2012, we explain how GIT was translated into Japan and what practices were promoted in the translation. We describe how GIT was imported from USA to Japan in 2007, and how it was translated by various Japanese actors (government agencies, telecom companies, electronics companies, trade associations, etc.). We also point out how extra-human events, such as the 3.11 earthquake disaster affected the translation of GIT.
