A collaboration network between firms in the Japanese film industry

Abstract

The Japanese film industry employs a production committee network, consisting of TV companies. These firms invest in films, and receive the profits as well as the rights to sell products and services relating to the film. This research regards that each film is an invention, profitable movies are innovations, and the production committee is a professional community with a role in film promotion innovation. This research demonstrates the influence of company network positions within the production committee on the performance of films invested in. This analysis employs structural equation model, using network indexes from the production committee network from 2010 to 2013. The results show that network positions have positive and negative impacts on the innovation of films invested in.
