We have compared plasma lipid, lipoprotein and apo E levels among the different apo E phenotype groups, and estimated the average effects of the three common alleles (ξ2, ξ3 and ξ4) on their levels in the Japanese normolipidemic subjects (80 males and 20 females, mean 48 years). Plasma TG, VLDL-TG, VLDL-C and apo E levels were high in the apo E 3/2 group, intermediate in the apo E 3/3 group and low in the apo E 4/3 group, whereas plasma TC, LDL-C and HDL-C levels were low in the apo E 3/2 group, intermediate in the apo E 3/3 group and high in the apo E 4/3 group. In addition, the ξ2 allele had an effect to increase the TG, VLDL-TG, VLDL-C and apo E levels, and to decrease the plasma TC, LDL-C and HDL-C levels, whereas the ξ4 allele had an effect opposite to the ξ2 allele. The ξ3 allele had no effect on plasma lipid variables. These results demonstrate that the ξ2 and ξ4 alleles have the reciprocal effects on plasma lipid, lipoprotein and apo E levels.
