We determined serum apolipoprotein H concentration in non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) by a single radial immunodiffusion and evaluated the clinical significance of apolipoprotein H.
Apolipoprotein H levels in NIDDM (73 cases, age: 59.5±13.1 years) was 24.8±6.7mg/dl, did not differ from 24.7±3.7mg/dl in healthy group (23 cases, age: 56.3±6.2 years). Apolipoprotein H levels were not depend on the levels of blood glucose and the kinds of therapeutic of diabetes.
Apolipoprotein H levels had a significant positive relationship to serum triglyceride (TG) levels and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)-TG levels (r=0.418; p<0.001, r=0.385; p<0.001 respectively), but negatively correlated with VLDL-cholesterol/VLDL-TG ratio (r=-0.427, p<0.001). As regards to the main components of TG-rich lipoprotein, apolipoprotein H levels had a significant positive relationship to apolipoprotein C-II, C-III and E levels (r=0.424, 0.590, 0.406 respectively, all of p<0.001).
On the basis of these data, apolipoprotein H may have an important role in regulating the TG-rich lipoprotein metabolism in patients with NIDDM.
