Horse anti-dog-thymocyte serum (ALS) was prepared for the purpose of applying it to laryngeal transplantation. Two different batches of ALS were made by two different immunization schedules. One of these schedules involved the repeated injections of thymocytes over a long period of time, thereby getting ALS with high cytotoxic and leukoagglutinin titers. The other regimen was characterized by two injections over a short period of time, resulting in production of low titer ALS.
The hemagglutinin activity against dog erythrocytes contained in the immunizing cell suspensions could be removed by absorption of the anti-plasma with washed dog erythrocytes. Complete absorption of the hemagglutinin activing in the high titer-ALS required large amounts of erythrocytes. The cytotoxic and leukoagglutinin titers of ALS were not reduced markedly by the absorption with dog erythrocytes.
