The porcelain insulator is to be ordinarily cemented by neat Portland cement. In this paper, the present authors studied on the special mortar from Portland cement and potsherd, to obtain good result of cementing porcelain part and metallic pin. The scrap of porcelain insulator was crushed, ground, sieved and obtained as powder of potsherd (or Scherben in German) of several fineness: (a) 100-80 meshes/in, (b) 80-70 meshes/in, (c) 70-50 meshes/in and 40-20 meshes/in. These four kinds of Scherben or potsherd were mixed with early high strength Portland cement in various proportions: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 or 100 parts of Scherben to 100 parts of cement, kneaded with water 35 or 49% of cement (or 0.35 or 0.49 water-cement ratio), and moulded to prismatic (4×4×16cm) test pieces. The test of bending and compressive strengths, the expansion test between from room temperature (17°C) to 150°C, and the repeating test of cooling (0°C) and heating (100°C) were systematically carried out to compare and discuss the effect of addition of Scherben (potsherd) to Portland cement to be used as the cementing mortar of porcelain insulator. These studies are now being further studied, which results will be hereafter reported in the next papers.
