How to Use the Modern Operating Room for the Education of Neurosurgeons(<SPECIAL ISSUE>Lifelong Education for Neurosurgeons)

The foundation of surgical education is learning by participating in surgical procedures. This model of education, which is a form of apprenticeship, effectively transmits the particular skills and knowledge necessary to perform complex operations. However, it has many liabilities, including a limited ability to share such learning beyond the assistant and limited preservation of unique surgical experiences. Furthermore, the surgeon and trainee must be in the same place at the same time. Technology for capturing, recording, transmitting, editing, archiving, and sharing neurosurgical experience is readily available for use in the operating room. This article reviews ways that these technologies can be implemented in the modern operating room to facilitate the education of neurosurgeons and neurosurgical trainees.
