1) When steel is put in hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide solutions, general and local corrosions are remarkable on the acid side. In the solutions of pH7-9, however, the corrosion process is very slow. At pH 10, the corrosion scarcely happens.
2) In the mixed solutions of hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide the corrosion is quicker and more remarkable, and even at pH7-9 it is still far quicker and greater. If the amount of cyanide exceeds a certain limit, iron dissolves in the form of cyanide complex, though without any changes in appearance. The corrosion can hardly be noticed in the solutions above pH 10.
3) There is no appreciable difference in corrosive action between 25°C and 40°C.
4) Cyanide is very corrosive, but the action is far stronger when cyanide and sulfide ions co-exist in the solutions.
5) Stress generally accelerates corrosion, and especially so in the solutions below pH 9.
