Abstract At Kyushu Dental University School of Dentistry, we have given supplementary lectures named “Seminar of dental biomaterials” to 6th-year students mainly to help them pass the National Examination for Dentists in addition to regular lectures. We focus on this learning support and give a total of eight lectures a year. In order to improve these lectures, the attitudes of the students and the required contents of the supplementary lectures were examined by a questionnaire survey of attending students in 2017.
In summary, 97.8% of the target students attended the supplementary lectures at least once and 22.0% of them attended all eight lectures. The average attendance rate was 67.2% (standard deviation : 8.6). The pre-answer rate of the exercises fluctuated greatly in the lectures, and the average value was 65.3% (15.8) of the respondents. As reasons for attending the supplementary lecture, 95.9% (4.1) of respondents mainly chose “awareness of contents I don't understand”, “understanding of easily mistaken points” and/or “understanding of solving methods”. Regarding the purpose and reason for attending, more than half of the respondents chose “making time for intensive study” and “difficulty of completing self-study”, etc. Thus, regarding how the students perceived the supplementary lectures, they were found to attend the lectures in order to reduce their anxiety and for coping, according to their individual preparations for the national examination.
For the supplementary lectures in future, it is considered necessary to set learning goals and construct learning programs that will provide effective support based on the mind state and attitudes of the students.
