A kind of “gram negative” fusiform obligate aerobic bacteria was isolated from tooth coating of a normal mouth and was identified as Bacillus fusiformis, for its various biological characters.
This bacterium was studied electron-microscopically, by using emulsion specially prepared to avoid the morphological changes of the cultured bacteria.
The most interesting result was the discovery of the existence of flagella by some strains of B. fusiformis. (Fig. 3)
According to the observation, several flagella exist irregulary around the bacterial body, so apparently this bacterium does not belong to Monotricha, Amphytricha or Lophotricha, but Peritricha.
(This is the briefest synopsis of the publication made at the 5th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Stomatological Society in April 1951)
