The objective of this study is to outline the process by which dairy farming has developed in the Ba Vi area of
northern Vietnam and evaluate the current situation of dairy farmers. The author conducted field surveys based
on direct interviews from 2012 through 2016. The personal interviews obtained information from dairy farmers
about the introduction of dairy farming in 1956 to its present expansion in Ba Vi. Based on these interviews, the
author identified three phases in the dairy farming development process in Ba Vi: the dairy farming introduction
period (1956 -1985); the dairy farming revival period (1986 - 2000); and the dairy farming development period (2001-2015). In addition, the survey showed that the development of fresh milk production in cooperation with the Ba Vi Cattle and Forage Research Center established in 1964 resulted in improvement of cross-bred milk cows and grass and fodder trees for dairy farmers, with training courses at the farmgate level and local technical stuff members, in response to the“ Dairy Promotion Program” of the Government in 2000. However, the signing of the TPP (Trans- Pacific Partnership Agreement) in November 2017, introduced the possibility of competition between small and medium scale farmers and large ranches owned by dairy companies.
