In order to find out an excellent adsorbent for on-line solid-phase extraction, we examined here the adsorption-desorption characteristics of PCB by using polymer gels, reversed-phase silica gels and carbon sorbents. Among eleven kinds of sorbents examined, the group of polymer gel was found to give rather high adsorption performance (the PCB recovery rate 95 %). The PCB recovery rate decreased with increasing concentration of impurities (hydrocarbons in a sample) in each case of the tested adsorbents. Especially, aromatic hydrocarbon impurities gave serious influence on the PCB recovery performance. However, we found that divinylbenzene-N-vinylpyrrolidone gel, combination copolymer having hydrophilic polymer and hydrophobic polymer, was the most suitable adsorbent material for rapid PCB analysis in aqueous sample because of its excellent PCB adsorption performance as well as its rather good insusceptibility to hydrocarbon impurities. In the case of impurities of high concentration, it was found that activated carbon fiber could recover almost all PCB by increasing amount of packing. This adsorbent is expected to be applied to PCB analysis in insulating oil because of its selective adsorption-desorption characteristics against aromatic hydrocarbons.
