Abstract

Today, voter education is a requirement. Thus, this research develops geography lessons to nurture citizens who can think more deeply about social participation.

Research results include the following four points. First, the author developed geography classes to reflect on our own social perceptions using the secondary school unit, “American society seen from the presidential election.” Second, by thinking about geography from a social-participation viewpoint, the author has clarified the type of practicable geography class likely to foster citizenship. Additionally, the author revealed the geography class composition theory that causes us to reflect on our own social perceptions. Third, the author clarified the necessity of evaluating the concept and content of geography from the viewpoint of achieving social studies goals in geography class. Further, the author has clarified a method of using geography as a means of understanding society based on social studies goals. Fourth, the author has presented a concrete class model in which political events, not previously addressed in geography classes, were incorporated into lessons.
