Abstract

We have proposed a method to analyze the shift of each particle inside a compressed propellant using 3D X-ray CT image analysis. To analyze the particle displacements, CT images of a simulated propellant sample were taken at 3 steps: before, during, and after compression. The images before and during compression showed that particles near the sample top tended to displace a longer distance in the compression direction, and particles near the sample sides tended to displace outward. The images before and after compression showed that particle displacement like rotational displacement inside the sample was residual. This method can visualize the displacement inside composite materials in response to stress by using the internal particles as markers.
