Basic Investigation of Cooling Behavior by Water Spray and Air-Blow on Green Sand with High-Temperature

Abstract

  The sand cooling process before the mulling of green sand is indispensable for obtaining green molding sand with proper conditioning and performance characteristics. In a previous study, the water-spray cooling behavior of the high-temperature green sand that exceeds 100℃ by water spray was investigated under static conditions. It was found that in the early stage of watering cooling, the evaporation cooling of water mainly occurs through watering. In the later stage of watering cooling, the temperature decreased through heat transfer behavior, the same as air (natural) cooling. However, this result is for a steady-state of the green sand with high temperature, and it is unclear whether the present theoretical formulas can be applied during mixing or cooling with stirring.

  In the present study, both the water spray cooling and air-blow cooling behavior of the high-temperature molding sand with a high temperature that exceeds 100℃, which is mulling, were investigated by experiments and numerical analysis. The results clarified the effect of watering on the temperature drop of the hot sand in the early stage of sand cooling. The air-blow cooling phenomenon was also confirmed in the later stage of cooling. Furthermore, two types of cooling behaviors were explained using two equations expressing the heat transfer and modified evaporation of water.
