One of the authors has developed a position and force compound control pneumatic cylinder (PFC cylinder) which was designed so as to achieve a rise time 3 ms for the electrode force control in the spatterless resistance spot welding. This paper describes the structural optimization of the force control cylinder of the PFC cylinder to get a smaller rise time. From the experiments with various strokes using a very thin dummy cylinder room hand made, by supply pressures 0.4 and 0.6 [MPa], it is first cleared that there exists the optimum stroke. Second, around the optimum stroke, it is also cleared that the rise time of the dummy sylinder with a suitable rectangular groove on the piston surface becomes smaller than that with no groove under the same cylinder volume, and is cleared that, there exists the optimum width and depth of the rectangular groove.
