Abieto fagetum forests are among the most important natural resources of the Balkan peninsular in Europe. This study compared regeneration patterns in protected and in regularly-harvested stands with similar environmental conditions. Spatial patterns of beech, fir and spruce saplings in the forest managed by a 10-year-cycle selective-cut are not significantly different but fir is the most abundant. Beech juveniles dominate the protected forest while spruce has a low density and the highest degree of clustering. The results support assumptions that: (1) forest regeneration patterns are influenced by a preference given to conifers, (2) fir regeneration likely benefit from overhunting of wild ungulates, (3) the removal of large spruce trees (e.g. resonance wood) from the protected forest may diminish the natural regeneration of spruce trees.
