Policy and legislative mechanisms concerning Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in Myanmar have been in place and gradually evolved since 1856. In 1995 Myanmar could adopt a forest policy that addresses existing issues and reflects changing social and environmental needs of the country in a sustainable manner. In line with the international initiatives to monitor, assess and report on the social, technical, ecological and economic sustainability of forest management, Myanmar has also developed its own set of criteria and indicators (C&I) for SFM. The C&I initially identified in 1996 and subsequently revised are now to be put to the test for effective implementation. This presentation describes the background of the development the forest policy, C&I and other relating policy instruments in Myanmar, and present status of forest management system.
