Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi play crucial roles in forest ecosystems. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the mycorrhizal formation between host and ECM fungus is poorly understood. Cenococcum geophilum (Cg) is one of most widely distributed ECM fungi. We have isolated the 304 Cg strains from 6 ecogeographical regions and 37 tree species and identified their SNP genotyping with the whole genome resequencing. Here, we evaluated the ability of each Cg strain to form mycorrhizal roots with Betula platyphylla and Pinus densiflora, respectively. The results showed that the infection ability among Cg strains was diverse but not different between B. platyphylla and P. densiflora. We analyzed the effects of the mycelial growth, original host and isolated location on infection ability of Cg strains and identified the SNP and candidate genes related to the mycorrhizal formation of Cg by the genome-wide association study.
