Abstract

This study aims to clear the recent decrease and to look into its factors at Matsushiro-machi in Nagano city, where many water courses and garden ponds are left from Edo period. The research on them has been down 5 times from 1981, and we compared these results. About the watercourses, Sensuiro (watercourse connecting garden pond and garden pond) is mainly lost, particularly north area at Daikan-cho, north area at Baba-cho, and east and south area at Omoteshiba-cho. But Kawa (watercourse flowing along the street) doesn’t change and Segi (watercourse flowing through the back of the residence) isn’t lost. The framework of the watercourses is left. And about the garden ponds, 45% of them have been lost. The residential land development and the lack of water cause these decreases in particular. To preserve them, it is important that proprietor, local resident and local government cooperate and work out a countermeasure.
