Abstract
This study reports the result of the research for two gardens at MANTOKUIN site which was built at AZUCHI-MOMOYAMA period, and shows some ideas about one of the gardens IKENIWA. An archaeological research found that IKENIWA was constructed not only for appreciation but as drains which protect the temple precinct against erosion by flowing water. NAKASHIMA (island) was enclosed with stones all around. On the face of NAKASHIMA, some stones were set up at several intervals and the others were set sidewards between set up stones.
The author noticed some technical similarity of piling up the stones, and pointed out the possibility that the gardeners who constructed IKENIWA rerated to the craftmen who piled up the stonewalls at MANTOKUIN site and so on.
