Abstract
This report deals with the attempt of restoring the vegetation through analyzing the large plant remains buried in the pond at Kongo-shinin garden in Toba-Rikyu site in the late Heian period. Firstly, 5 litters of soil was sampled every 1 or 2m intervals along the edge of the bottom line of the pond site. On the second step, all the samples were screened out with water on a 1mm meshed seive and large plant remains were collected and identified. In this analysis, 24 kinds of trees were identified. Needle-leaves tree was only Pinus densiflora and others were all deciduous tree. The latter included some blossom trees such as cherry tree and other Prunus, Japanese pear, Rubus, Meria and so on. These were supposed to be the major component plants at Kongo-shinin garden.
