Taimenjo Garden was built for the 350th
memorial of Shinran Shonin.
Junnyo Shonin, the twelveth monshu or generation leader of Nishi Hongwanji Temple, appointed Kawanabe Kuranosuke as the chief gardener. He obtained garden stones from Jurakudai on May 22, 1610, from May 28, 1610, Many Kyoto citizens were called upon to build this garden.
The main theme of this garden is “Nembutsu”. Jodo Shinshu is the teaching that instruct foolish beings may attain Buddhahood through chanting “Nembutsu” or the repeating of the Name Namo Amida Butsu, which embodies the fullfilment of the Primal Vow.
The design of this garden represents “Igyodo”. “Igyodo” means to take the ship of Amida's Vow. Its configuration is “The Pure Land Garden” based on the White Lotus and on the teaching of Kyogyoshinsho.
