A survey was conducted on Home Economics classes following the revised curriculum of basic education in Finland. Observations of the Home Economics classes and interview surveys with Home Economics teachers in two comprehensive schools in Vantaa City and Helsinki City were conducted.
The results can be summarized as follows:
1) At the comprehensive school in Vantaa City, Home Economics was offered as an elective subject from the 4th grade to the 6th grade and classes took place for two hours a week over a six-month period. A Home Economics teacher devised the lesson plan.
2) At the comprehensive school in Vantaa City, Home Economics students participated in “Life Skill,” which is a cross-curricular phenomenon-based theme learning for 4th grade students.
3) At the comprehensive school in Helsinki, small-group cooking training was conducted as a compulsory Home Economics class practiced in the 7th grade.
In addition, it was noted that this type of cooking practice was practiced more frequently by 7th grade students in Vantaa City than it was in Helsinki, according to Vantaa City's lesson plan. It was clear that cooking skills were still emphasized at school even after the revised Home Economics curriculum.
