Abstract

We examined the influences of vitamin A restriction and/or a high-fat diet on bone parameters. Eleven-week-old male rats were divided into 4 groups: basic control diet (Cont.), basic control diet with vitamin A restriction (AR), high-fat diet (F), and high-fat diet with vitamin A restriction (FAR). All groups were acclimated for 28 days.

The results showed that there was no significant difference among groups in serum vitamin A concentrations. The cancellous bone volume and bone mineral contents of vertebrae were lower in the FAR group compared with the Cont. group. However, there were no significant differences among groups in bone parameters of the femur.

Collectively, our findings indicate the effects of high-fat diet intake or vitamin A restriction on bone parameters of vertebrae and the femur. An adequate intake of fat or vitamin A is necessary in order to maintain bone health and prevent osteoporosis.
