Abstract
This investigation is to classify the districts in Kobe by the apparent movement of population and consider the environment of urban living with the hopes it may be useful for planning improvement in our living conditions.
According to this investigation, either gradual or rapid population growth has been noticed in many residential zones at the foot of the mountains, and many of the householders in that area are engineers or occupy administrative positions. The living conditions in this area, on the whole, are better than those in other areas, but the itemized estimation reveals that the features of “Safety” are predominant, but “Convenience” is poor.
On the contrary, population movement is either stagnating or decreasing in the central part of the city where the commercial district, industrial district, and the district intermingled with residences, stores, and factories are located. The householders in those districts are mostly either manual laborers or owners of some kinds of business. Their living conditions are comparatively poor, and the itemized estimation shows that they enjoy more “Convenience” but suffer from less “Safety”.
