Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify time use of farming couples and to contribute to the establishment of their equal partnerships. This survey was conducted in October, 1997-March, 1998. Survey respondents were active members of rural life improvement group and their husbands in Mie, Ibaraki and Nagano Prefectures. The results were as fallows : 1) On the farming days, personal care time and social/cultural activities time of wives were shorter than their husbands. Total working time of wives was much longer than their husbands. 2) Although husbands do household works on the non-farming days, it was remarkable that household work time of wives was much longer than their husbands. In spite of the non-farming days, wives could not take a rest. There were obvious differences in social/cultural activities time among the couples. The results suggest that it is necessary to change the unbalanced time use between wives and husbands in order to establish a gender equal life-style.
