Abstract
There are approximately 13.7 million people in Japan with pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), and this number is expected to increase further. The objective of this study is to establish measures for preventing diabetes, and to ascertain the correlation of dietary factors and environmental factors with abnormal glucose tolerance. Data were analyzed from an interview-based survey conducted on residents undergoing basic health screening. The results show a strong correlation between abnormal glucose tolerance and both hypertension and obesity, and that factors such as skipping breakfast, eating dinner out, drinking and smoking were involved in the development of pre-diabetes.
