Abstract
The authors used 5% Epontol, a short-acting intravenous anesthetic agent, on 37 cases which were as follows, 15 cases of esophagoscopya nd bronchoscop3210, cases of painful postoperative treatment and 2 cases of reposition of nasal bone fracture. The 2 cases of endoscopy, we could not examine for periodic apnoea and pharyngeal reflex. All painful postoperative treatments (maxillectomy) vas able to be treated without pain.
This drug is especially effective for simple operative procedures and painful treatments for 3 to 7 minutes at the longest. To gain sufficiently the definite effect of anesthesia, it should be injected within 10 to 30 seconds.
The onset of Epontol induced anesthesia was showed by hyperventilation and soon after be followed by a phase of apnoea or hypoventilation, but normal respiration was returned after a few minutes. The blood pressure was decreased after the injection, while the pulse rate was increased, but are returned to normal rate in the following minutes.
After 20 to 30 minutes, patients were free of subjective disturbance and deficiency of psychological function.
The clinical complications as vomiting, visual and respiratory disturbance were rare.
