Abstract
Experimental studies were made on the function of the tympanic muscles, especially on the influence of the sound reflecting contraction of these muscles on the transmission of sound. The experiments were carried out with the electrical cochlear response led from the round window of the guinea pig as the indicator.
The experimental data led to the conclusion that the function of the tympanic muscles constitutes a part of the protecting function of the middle ear apparatus, and hence they regulate the degree of tension of the hearing apparatus.
