In this paper clinical results of tympanoplasty in 34 cases of cholesteatoma combined with adhesive otitis media were studied and the results obtained were compared with that of attic-cholesteatoma and also of adhesive otitis media. The postoperative hearing was sufficient in only 32 % of all cases. The reasons of this insufficient results were analyzed as follows.
1. Frequent type III or type IV tympanoplasty because of the intensive destruction of the ossicular chain.
2. Wide-spread loss of tympanic mucous membrane.
3. Dysfunction of tuba auditiva.
The most interesting fact is that the healing ratio is better in the open method group than closed method group in contrast to the results in attic-cholesteatoma and simple otitis media.
To gain a more sufficient result of tympanoplasty in this disease, further technical improvement are requested especially on the management of mucous membrane, tuba auditiva and the management of mastoid air cells concerning to the posterior external ear canal.
