Eighteen patients with a complaint of sudden deafness were treated with methyl glucamine salts which belong to the triiodobenzoic acid derivative. Remarkable reco very of the hearing was found in 11 patients of them and was not noticed in the other 5 patients who were all complete deaf.
The time delay between the onset of hearing loss symptoms and admission ranged from 1 to 21 days with an average delay of 5.2 days. For the first group of four pa tients, methylglucamine iothalamate (60%-Conray) was used at a dosage of 1.20gm; the second group of 6 patients, methylglucamine diatrizoate (65%-Angiografin) in doses of 1.30gm; the third group of 8 patients, methylglucamine iodamide (64.9%-Conrasin-L) in doses of 1.30gm. These doses were administered daily for an average of 6.4 days until the recovery appeared to be either complete or stabilized.
Treatment with methylglucamine salts of triiodobenzoic acid derivatives is effec tive if treatment is begun soon enough after the onset in patients whose hearing loss is not severe.
