The therapeutic effects using Amidotrizoate for sudden deafness from September 1973 to March 1977 were studied; the results were found to be the followings:
    1. Out of 76 cases using this therapeutic method, 30 cases resulted in complete recovery; 11 cases of remarkable recovery; 6 cases of recovery; 29 cases had no change.
    2. Out of 19 cases with vertigo, 2 cases resulted in recovery; 17 cases were seen to have no changes. It was found that this therapy had no effects on the cases with vertigo.
    3. Studies have been made of a relation between the periods from the onset of deafness till this therapy was applied. Eighty one parcent of the cases was found to result in complete recovery or remarkable recovery if the patient began this therapy within 14 days from the onset of deafness.
    4. Cases with less than 90 dB of hearing loss in the beginning of the therapy had positive effects from the therapy but cases with 90 dB and higher resulted in no recovery. Generally, it was seen through this therapy that a patient whose degree of hearing loss was between 70 dB and 90 dB had littie chance of complete recovery and had a tendency of a remarkable recovery which meant that the patient still had some hearing loss.
    5. It can not be denied that sudden deafness results in spontaneous recovery, but it was certified through this therapy that its therapeutic effects depends on Amidotrizoate because the healing process was proved at the same time when the therapy started.
    6. The drugs, as a rule, will bring better effects by increasing their dosage. In this therapy, 2ml of Amidotrizoate was dosed, but for the cases that 2ml was not effective, better therapeutic effects were gotten by dosing 20ml or 100ml. Therefore, it was proved that Amidotrizoate brought also better effects by increasing its dosage.

In the frontolateral laryngectomy, the glottal incision has usually been performed upwards from the opening at the cricothyroid membrane. Since the lesion on the vocal fold is scarcely observed during procedure of cutting off, this technique is insufficiently reliable in cases which the lesion is located on bilateral folds.
In the authors' method, the vocal fold is excised under the direct observation downwards from the opening at the epiglottic petiolus. After the anterior portion of the thyroid cartilage is divided, the thyrohyoid membrane is horizontally incised just above the thyroid notch and the supraglottic space is opened. While bilateral thyroid alae are laterally and the divided anterior cartilage is downwards tracted, the supraglottic mucous membrane is cut down along the edge of the divided cartilage from the opening. The arytenoid is first visualized and the upper surface of the vocal folds and the anterior commissure come subsequently into the sight. The lesion on the vocal fold can be cut out at the most adequate site under the excellent direct view.

This paper describes a case of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. Patho-physiological aspects of and surgical treatments for dysphagia in this clinical entity are discussed.
The patient was a fifty-nine year-old male who had developed dysphagia and hypernasality in speech at the age of forty-nine. Deglutition of the patient was investigated with a use of simultaneous recordings of X-ray video and EMG. The muscles which participated in deglutition presented normal temporary relationship from kinesiological aspects. However, passage of barium in the pharynx was markedly delayed because of weakened propeling force. This asynchronism between muscular activity and passage of barium made the problems more complicated.
Cricopharyngeal myotomy was fairly effective. Pharyngeal flap operation caused an aggravation of dysphagia.

Tissues of a carcinoma of the maxillary sinus (Squamous cell carcinoma) from 66 year-old patient was applicated to cultivation to examine their viability in vitro and responsiveness to some anti-cancer drugs.
Suspension type of cultured cells (MC cells), which were derived from above pa tient, showed population doubling time of 12 hours and could grow active for more than 100 days after starting cultivation.
The in vitro response of MC cells to several anti-cancer drugs (Bleomycin A2, ACNU, Amphotericin B) was compared to that of cultured mouse leukemia cells (L5178Y). The MC cells were more sensitive to Bleomycin A2 and ACNU whereas less sensitive to Amphotericin B than L5178Y cells.
Vitamin A, a polyene compound, enhanced the effect of ACNU to L5178Y cells exellently, in the presence of less effect to MC cells. Another polyene compound, Pentamycin, which would enhance the effect of Bleomycin A2 in transformed fibro blastic cells, showed similar enhancement of Bleomycin A2 in MC cells. The cultivation of cancer cells from patient to examine their in vitro response to anti-cancer drugs could be a useful assay method for screening of cancer chemotherapy.

According to Kuijpers' theory, Endocochlear DC Potential (EP) is thought to be the sum of a positive electrogenic K+ secretion potential and a negative K+ diffusion potential.
EP decreases during anoxia, and it is expected to be equal to K+ diffusion potenti al at it's lowest level. But in kanamycin poisoned guinea pigs, EP shows smaller decline during anoxea than in normal guinea pigs. It is difficult to explain this phe nomenon by Kuijpers' theory only.
In this study, the change of EP and Intracochlear Negative Potential (INP) were examined when anoxia, Ethacrynic acid, and Furosemide were loaded on normal and Kanamycin guinea pigs.
With these date, the origin of EP was discussed.

Eighteen patients with a complaint of sudden deafness were treated with methyl glucamine salts which belong to the triiodobenzoic acid derivative. Remarkable reco very of the hearing was found in 11 patients of them and was not noticed in the other 5 patients who were all complete deaf.
The time delay between the onset of hearing loss symptoms and admission ranged from 1 to 21 days with an average delay of 5.2 days. For the first group of four pa tients, methylglucamine iothalamate (60%-Conray) was used at a dosage of 1.20gm; the second group of 6 patients, methylglucamine diatrizoate (65%-Angiografin) in doses of 1.30gm; the third group of 8 patients, methylglucamine iodamide (64.9%-Conrasin-L) in doses of 1.30gm. These doses were administered daily for an average of 6.4 days until the recovery appeared to be either complete or stabilized.
Treatment with methylglucamine salts of triiodobenzoic acid derivatives is effec tive if treatment is begun soon enough after the onset in patients whose hearing loss is not severe.

A case of candida esophagitis which was reconstituted the cellular immune deficiency with the transfer factor is reported. This case was diagnosed as chronic mucocuta neous candidiasis with esophageal involvement affer various clinical and laboratory examinations. The lesion was circumuscribed mainly in esophageal mucosa, and no definite cause such as improper use of steroids or antibiotics was suggested. Agglu tinating antibody titer against C. albicans was extremely higher than those of normal controls and localized superficial candidasis patient. On the other hand, delayed hypersensitivity reactions to the candida antigen and also to PPD were impaired. Neither endocrine abnomalities, hypovitaminosis A nor abnormal iron metabolism have been recognized.
Satisfactory result was obtained by the treatment with clotrimazole and transfer factor. Cellular immune state was successfully reconstitated. Clinical and immuno logical observations and sustaining administration of transfer factor have been conti nued.
