Tympanoplasty was performed on 138 patients (149 ears) during the period from 1971-1978, and long-term results were investigated in 68 patients (73 ears).
Postoperative results assessed in the range of 500-2000 cps using pure-tone audiogram revealed hearing improvements in 41 ears (56%), no changes in 18 (25%) and aggravations in 14 (19%). The conditions of the tympanic membrane and the external auditory canal were determined to be adquate in 31 ears (42%). In the remaining 42 ears (58%) various pathological finding, namely, retraction of the tympanic membrane and deffect of the superior or posterior-superior portion on the external auditory canal, were present. Similar findings were also observed in some cases with improved hearing.
It is considered that the above mentioned pathological findings are important factors causing the present symptoms, such as, hearing impairment, vertigo, tinnitus, aural discharge, headaches, etc.
