Seventy-eight cases of major salivary gland tumors experienced in our department between 1972 and 1978 were reviewed and histopathologically analysed. Of the 78 cases, 60 cases were parotid gland tumor cases with a malignant-benign tumor ratio of 1: 1.6. The remaining 18 cases were tumors of the submaxillary gland origin consisting of equal numbers of malignant and benign cases.
The most interesting feature in the present histopathological studies is the morphological similarity between pleomorphic adenoma with cribriform pattern and adenoid cystic carcinoma, and the presence of cases in which the portions of the specimen represented both types of tumor respectively. Although further studies are necessary, this finding strongly suggests the transition from pleomorphic adenoma to adenoid cystic carcinoma.
