Abstract
Statistical analysis of 39 BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Postural Vertigo) cases was made in reference to clinical features and therapeutic prognosis. Eighty percent of the total cases were those aged from 30 to 60 years old. As a clinical symptom, rotatory vertigo was most common (84.6%), while tinnitus and hearing loss were uncommon (41%). All of the cases showed nystagmus of either rotatory or horizontal-rotatory type. Direction-fixed rotatory nystagmus was frequently observed in the positional nystagmus test, while direction-changing rotatory nystagmus was found in the positioning nystagmus test. Caloric and blood pressure test showed abnormal findings only in 23% and 7.7% respectively. For relief of vertigo, vasopressor, vasodilator agents, vitamines, sodium bicarbonate and tranquilizers were administered. As a whole, the vertiginous symptom subjectively relieved in 2 weeks after the initial treatment. Good prognosis is one of the features of BPPV. However, the postural vertigo of central lesions is to be ruled out in order to establish appropriate therapeutic schedule.
